A few months ago my very excited husband accepted and started a job at a major consumer bank in America. First day he logs in (remote position) and he’s on phone the entire morning with IT folks to get his systems properly set up while having frequent meetings with his peers for introduction and what not. Anyway, around noon my husband’s direct boss messages him asking why he isn’t online. Which as it turns out was just a tech issue on the Skype’s end. He calls my husband on WhatsApp demanding why he isn’t online every second of the day and when my husband explains the issue he responds “I don’t believe you”. Weird. Especially since there’s so much work to be shown for his time.
From that start to the next few days it’s completely hellish with the manger emailing folks every 20 mins or so to make sure everyone’s online. Having impromptu calls and being angry at his subordinates about not attending the call within moments notice. It got so bad that after a few weeks of this extreme micromanaging behavior I asked my husband to just quit. He was hesitant but since we had some money saved up and he sent his resignation letter.
But he sent that in to all his managers superiors, all the HR folks in the entire company( including overseas) detailing (I mean like journal notes) every single incident and how the company culture was shit. Provided we didn’t expect anything actually fruitful to come out of it. But something interesting happened. Rest of the team members privately called my husband to thank him for the letter and the visibility and that “don’t expect any different anywhere else”.
Well he just joined another job a few weeks ago and if not for much they actually respect employees like normal humans and while work remains work, I’m still proud that as millennials we stood up for ourselves and gave the biggest fuck you to one of the big companies and walked away when it wasn’t right. I’m so proud of him.
(The company hr asked for an exit interview. He didn’t go for it as he just wanted to focus on finding another position then).
