tl:dr Josh worked in a wildly unsafe manner but management expected the rest of us to adhere to his work ethic
At my old job (that I quit last week, yay!) we had a guy called Josh and he was almost singlehandedly responsible for our toxic work environment. He was a great guy, but his work ethic was problematic to say the least.
I worked in the warehouse of a large bottle shop (liquor store for you Americans), being responsible for taking in load, putting it out on shelves etc. just general stuff like that. Obviously it's a very safety-oriented job, but Josh would just disregard everything. He had a philosophy of not taking breaks because he valued getting more work done over 'wasting' 30 minutes on a break, he would constantly ignore trolley limits and overstock them to get more stock out and on occasion he would break displays in order to fit more stock into them.
The effect of this was that when we got new management a few months back, they saw Josh as a shining light of great work ethic and willingness to do anything to get the job done and have expected us to adhere to his level. They have basically adopted the line of “you're legally allowed to take breaks, but think of how much quicker the work would get done if you didn't”, have handwaved away all the trolley safety limits put in place by old management etc. and it's created a horrible workplace as most of us just simply can't work like Josh. Don't be a Josh.
