I’m trapped. I know a lot of people are in jobs with staffing problems but apart from a brand new hire I’m the last man standing. It used to be a team of 5, now I’m just trying to keep the place open while the manager is on holiday for a few weeks.
It’s a seven day a week, 16 hours a day business, with branches throughout the UK, paying a little over minimum wage.
Thanks to the pandemic and mismanagement we’ve been struggling all year, 6 day weeks are normal and my holiday entitlement may as well not be there.
My last day off was August bank holiday monday, I’m working double shifts so the newbie doesn’t quit too and there’s no relief in sight despite temporary staff being promised.
It’s tempting to walk out but what happens legally as they will have to close? Will I lose all entitlements? What if I don’t find another job as the winter bills hit us?
This tangling dread and hopelessness cannot be normal right?
There’s more to life than making yourself sick to survive?
Rant over, I’ll go for a little cry now.
