Quit public accounting on the spot

I worked for a public accounting firm that has about 50 employees. It seems like one person a week has quit since the middle of March. Which should speak for within itself. In June, we have informal promotions and formal promotions in December. I was supposed to get promoted last December but was passed over. I took it in the chin and worked hard to prove myself. Last week they announced who would get promoted and I wasn’t on that list. They had passed me over once again for an inexperienced accountant. Being the irrational person I am, I quit. During my talk with the partner, they promised me the promotion if I stayed. They also told me they wanted to make this person happy and didn’t want them to leave.
