Really starting to feel pity for Over-Enthusiastic Employees

Just started a new job at a big grocery chain in my area, and the “Manager”, isn't the manager. He's the guy who does the manager duties, but doesn't have the title or the pay. I feel bad for him, he's so loyal to a company that doesn't care about him. He's been here for 8 years, and for 6 of them, doing the managers job. You might ask, “Where's the actual manager?” He's often in the back doing, “paperwork,” or, “Talking to corporate.” It's sad man. I could never commit so much time and energy to a company just to have myself be used. This place offers 401k's, and insurance and it's unionized, and he has all the benefits. I asked him why he hasn't tried to move up the ladder, you're basically the manager right now, all he says was, “This place has better things in store for…

Now I can understand being homeless and a company picking you up off the street, but he wasn't. He grew up in white suburbia.
