So, I've worked construction (varied trades, but commercial flat roofing for the most part) for close to a decade. I'm getting older, and body is showing wear. I come home tired as fuck, and have zero energy to play with my little boy. I'm angrier and angrier every day. We don't have set hours for either start or end, it's a crapshoot every single day. On top of that, I'm tired of the asinine ineptitude of leadership, from under bidding jobs to dreadful “motivational” speeches that tell us we just have to work harder and keep pushing because we don't make enough profit… yet we're the most profitable division at our company.
We do have pretty damn good benefits, we get a yearly bonus (fluctuates a lot because nobody knows the exact criteria they use to calculate it).
Thing is, I want a better job. I don't wanna toil at a factory. I'm taking a few steps towards that direction, but most of the stuff I want or have experience with requires college degrees, which I'm not going to get one, I lack the time, desire, and financial resources to waste on a dubious degree.
I'd like to get ahead at my company, but it's kind of a “who you know” mentality with leadership.
I just feel kinda stuck at the moment. I want out. I want something ideally that's a mix of field and office stuff. I wanna use my noggin more than my brawn, and I've got the skills for it, but I just keep getting pigeonholed into labor jobs.
