I'm a senior-level product owner/manager type. When I'm looking for new positions, I rely on really good recruiters who are knowledgeable, can identify the right talent for a role, and can advise me as I go through the application process.
I'm old (50). I like where I'm at, but I'm always interested in seeing what's out there. I always make that clear.
I got an email from a recruiter stating, “I just had a candidate decline an offer due to personal reasons so the hiring manager is very motivated to interview and hire someone THIS WEEK!”
And I'm rolling my eyes. Here's why:
- I don't care that you had a candidate turn down an offer for personal reasons. Deciding the job isn't for them is “personal reasons”. Deciding the client is cheaper than cheap, or that it's a toxic environment, is a “personal reason”. Now, maybe this is the greatest job ever, and maybe the previous candidate just had a really serious personal situation that kept them from taking the job, but I'm more inclined to believe that the candidate got an offer and declined.
- The whole “we're hiring THIS WEEK!” nonsense. Ugh. Even if I was out of work, this would turn me off. If they're so desperate that they'll hire the first guy that they can find, then I don't want the job. It's not even that I value myself as better than just a warm body to fill a spot. It's that I know the value of what I do. A bad product guy can set an organization back and cost them money. If they're more concerned with chair-filling, then I really don't want to work there.
Am I being too hard on the recruiter? I'm not going to apply, but I feel like this is just complete BS.
