Recruiter Lied to Me and I Just Found Out a Year In

I know this isn't the worst nightmare story this sub has seen but I had to share a bit after getting blindsided by this. I'm a contractor in a job I actually enjoy. Remote work, good pay, field I enjoy with enough variety to keep my ADHD from strangling me. The only issue I have is that it's entirely hourly, so when work runs out I don't get paid, and has a yearly cap on hours (which I found out at the end of last year, right in time for the holiday season). I knew this going into it but had a small little hope dangled in front of me on a chain that I knew would be just out of reach for awhile: the potential for full time employment after my contract period ended. I knew I could get the run around on this but everything else was fine…

I knew I could get the run around on this but everything else was fine enough for now for me to deal with it.

Except it turned out that was a lie. The company in question recruits internally and had always assumed I'd be on contract. They apparently told the recruiter “potential for contract period to be extended” (which it thankfully was and I've impressed them enough that there's no danger of them ending my contract for asking about it).

So I went through all of my emails and realized two things:

One was that all of my communication with the recruiter was through the phone so I have no evidence of what he promised.

Two was that he disappeared entirely a few months into this and I was handed to different members of the agency and without an email with his name on it I have no way to find him.

Lesson learned, always get job descriptions in text. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to figure out where the hell my future is heading again.
