Recruiter wants me to do a 3hr task with no guarantee of an interview

I’m currently looking to transition into a different industry, so while I’m currently mid-level I have been considering some slightly more entry level positions. Stupid I know but I hate the duties of my current job and if I’m going to be stuck doing this for 40 years I may as well enjoy it right? Anyway, I applied for a position that requires 1-2 yrs experience (I have 3). I have had 2 telephone interviews which went really well and I got a great vibe from the interviewers. The job was listed around my current salary, but I also get commission which I wouldn’t for this new job, so I explained this to the recruiter and she came back to me next day saying that there may be room in the budget to stretch if I get to that stage.

I’m getting good vibes from them & it sounds like the right role, but then they ask me to do a task – not to run through in the interview but for them to review and then decide if they want to interview me (for the 3rd time!) based on that. Bit of a pain but I like the company, so I do it and sent it off.

A week later they come back and basically say they liked my task and they want me to do another one!! Again – with no guarantee of an interview. This time it is a 3hr timed assignment, which they would pay me £20 for. Not even close to minimum wage, and I work for above minimum regardless. It would also have to be done in my current working hours, so I’d have to take time out of my work day at my current job, to do a 3hr exam for £6.60 an hour, with possibly no outcome whatsoever.

I’m now not feeling good about this company after they’re asking so much in this process. This isn’t a technical or a senior role. Getting paid for the task is all well & good but could they not be tricking me into freelancing for cheap?

I’d really appreciate some advice if anyone has any insight into this. Am I overthinking this, or am I being taken for a ride?
Am in the UK for context.
