I just accepted a job offer for a position that pays quite a bit more than my current job. I am also in school and the new position is in the field that I’m studying. I really like my current job, though, so it was tough to put in my notice. I really like my coworkers and my boss, and I was very touched when my supervisor told me how hard it was going to be to replace me.
I still have a week left before I leave, and they just reposted my position. I make $28,500. Job postings where I work include the pay rate, and the new posting has a range from $28,500 to $42,500. There wasn’t a range on the pay rate when I applied, and even though I had actually worked in this position for my employer a few years prior, I wasn’t offered a higher pay rate when I started. In fact, during the interview I was flatly told that $28,500 was the pay rate.
My new job still pays more than the highest rate for this job, but had I been offered more money I might not have left because I really enjoy my job. To make matters worse, though, my coworker/friend is upset because she has been with the company for seven years and in this position for three and she barely makes over $15 p/hour. Also, I know for a fact that the high end for this posting is right around what my supervisor makes, because she was pretty recently promoted into her position. So, I saw in the job description what her position pays.
I’m just really hurt, because I thought I was valued and learned that I was not.
Edit to add:
-
The position is currently closed to internal applicants only.

Nobody at work has been ever seen a position posted with a salary range before. This is a local government agency. So, pay rates are typically set in stone for jobs that are not salaried.
