Salary and time off seem wonky

Hey everyone! I took my first salary job and I felt as though I had a good understanding of how salary worked but something seems shady. The trade one makes with salary is that, more often than not, you will be working extra hours and not getting paid any extra. However, I was under the impression that this meant you had more flexibility if you needed to take a day off, especially if there was absolutely no reason you needed to be in. I was feeling ill and stayed home mostly because it would be a huge detriment to my entire team if they were to get sick. I was not needed, we had coverage, I didn’t have any meetings. The trade one makes with salary is that, more often than not, you will be working extra hours and not getting paid any extra. However, I was under the impression that this meant you had more flexibility if you needed to take a day off, especially if there was absolutely no reason you needed to be in.

What’s the point of salary then? The trade off as I understood it, is that you can do something like have a four day week sometimes since you’re often working significant overtime without extra compensation.

Was I totally misinformed or is this job behaving badly?
