This was last year, I applied for a part time job at my local “home center”. They advertised the pay as 14.34/hour which I found fair. I am a disabled vet so a little extra money for a couple hours a day didn't hurt.
I talked to the hiring lady (HL) and she told me the pay was 14.34 and I could work no more than 4 hours a day, 3 days a week. Sounded great. She walks out to get some paperwork.
While she's out, the store manager (SM) walks in to introduce himself and after a couple minutes I am informed the job actually pays 12.54. So I told him the ad and the HL told me it was 14.34. He walked out, to strategize with the HL I guess.
Shortly they both walk in and tell me they could do the 14.34 but I have to work 5 days a week. I told them that's not what the ad said and not what the HL told me 5 minutes prior, so I thanked them and started to walk out. A couple of steps later the SM callse and tells me that they need the help so OK, 14.34 for 4 hours at 3 days a week.
So next I start coming in for paid training, 3 days or so of computer training on the specifics of the job and finally it's time to start putting my first few hours on the floor with a mentor employee.
Did I mention that I am a disabled vet? I walk with a cane and suffer from vertigo, but I can walk and sell stuff.
My assigned department as a disabled person?…the lumber department. The hardest in the store. I put in about 2 hours and I decided that was it, they can eat a weenie.
I walked out on a break and never came back. Week later I got my paycheck, which included my $250 hiring bonus. It's a wonder how these companies survive mistreating and lieing to their employees.
