(CYA = Cover Your Ass. Learn it. Live it.)
Long story short, I took some side contract work for a smallish company. I was immediately tasked with multiple things that were not included in my job description (no “Other Duties As Assigned”, I made sure of it), not mentioned in the two interviews, and that I had specifically, repeatedly said I have little to no experience with.
They'd set me up to fail by hiring someone (Hi there!) part-time at ~1/6th of rate of someone competent at the necessary level. They knew what they were doing.
After they tried to fuck me on pay by saying I hadn't entered my time, I resigned. Now they're at it again for the remaining pay. I'll be filing a wage complaint with the Department of Labor, including the e-mails confirming my hours FROM the company itself.
Screenshot and timestamp your hours, e-mails & Slack/text chats, take meeting notes, basically record anything you legally can.
HR is *NOT* your ally, it's there to cover the company's ass.
Remember to CYA.
