Antiwork

screw you recruiting director – I lost a bet and was told I had to post this on our way home from vacation

I normally don't post, typically just respond to people…so forgive me. I'm an adult male went back to school and recently graduated with my Master of Social Work degree to be a therapist. I started upon this process 4.5 years ago when I went back to complete my bachelors, then continued on with my masters. I also wanted to say this after working in life insurance for 7 years…never again did I want to work in corporate America. Struggling to get PTO off, sick time messed with, bullshit last minute overtime, Saturday overtime. NO. NEVER AGAIN. I went back to school so I could get my masters, put 2-3 years in somewhere, then leave and go into private practice, be my own boss, and never have to worry about a thing again in my life because frankly making 100k in PP is easy. I guess I was antiwork a lot…

I guess I was antiwork a lot longer than when I joined this sub or even knew about its existence.

I did my internship at this site, loved the site, loved the people. I got this internship basically when no internships were available by a friend who was a therapist and knew the owners so they made a phone call and ended up getting me the spot as this place stopped having internships. Almost everyone stopped having internships due to covid at this time when you had to sign off and get approved for them. I really did feel that to some degree I owed them a debt of gratitude.

I say that because I shit you not, I had expanded my search beyond my home state to areas near relatives to hopefully go live with for 7 months to get this thing done with so I could graduate on time as we had to find our own internships. I'm talking a spreadsheet with over 100 contacts deep, phone numbers, names, locations, all put into excel so when I followed up I knew where I had left off on previous interactions. Yeah, I felt some loyalty there unless something that was significantly better came to me I just going to do my 2 years there because I was already comfortable. I realized the administration was reasonable from a work expectations point of view (if you weren't a red flag from a productivity point of view you would be fine), but kind of out of touch in other areas.

Private practice therapist make 100k or higher and I'm suppose to be excited to work for 40k, no 401k, 100ish towards health insurance (which is like 400 or higher)? In our field its the 2 years of putting your time in while being exploited to get hours for full independent licensure…but at least your doing something you love right? I really do love what I do…first job I've never been a day late too so far or had a sick day or mental health day taken.

Anyways, I tested passed my boards exam, left the test center at 4pm, told all my personal family first and by that point and driving home (it was more than an hour away) it was after 5pm so I hadn't called the internship site back to let them know I passed (this is the last thing holding up my license with the state). Anyways, head out to join my family who was going on vacation because its like hey you passed, and your not going to be super depressed and bummed out.

Next morning, niece wanted to drive cuz she's 16 so she's behind us with nephew and there friends that they all wanted to take to go to this lake house. I'm in the car with my sister, brother in law its 8:30am…I was going to call them but I figured wait for people to get into the office, play phone tag if you need to because hey your in the car for most of the day to get to the vacation destination (cabin, boat, jetski, not ours so was nice to be invited to head down there). My Parents in the car behind the kids because it's like shit family vacation + some people my brother in law knows are going to be there.

I get called by this director and just goes right into everything immediately upon picking up the phone…so we are now on the cars Bluetooth…everyone can hear, and she's talking down to me, I need to be available for people who reach out to me ( I haven't even started and you deactivated my internship account btw so who are you talking to about being available?). Your license needs to be done by this day we can't push your start date at all. (I have so much control over how fast the state reviews my licensure). When someone you want to hire passes an exam required for licensing, do you immediately shit all over everything? I mean I worked hard for that shit, I wanted to enjoy the moment for a few days and be totally pumped. Instead they act like I am inhuman and a burden to interact with and they are doing me favors. Anyways, we get off the phone and both sister/brother in law are like wtf was that? Your going to work there?

No, no I'm not. Sent off an email calling out that behavior, and letting my “feelings” be known about that stuff, how that goes against there organization values, and everything that they post on social medias about. I cc'd my supervisor from my internship, clinical manager, and ownership. You spent an entire school year training me on your EHR, processes, investing time into me, developing me and couldn't even say hi, congratulations, ask if this was a good time to talk or even faked having any genuine interest in getting me started/hired or being excited about my passing a board exam (which you get paid for doing)?

At this point I have around 8 calls/messages from other said administration trying to figure out what's going on. The only person I emailed back was my supervisor (I genuinely like them, and they were a fantastic mentor for a year and to be honest I doubt they would get involved, probably said I don't know.)

No, don't worry people!!! I'm not going to work there! I have multiple interviews setup for this week. One of them is 70k…turns out the supervisor there has worked with me before and “was shocked to see my name come across their desk and looks forward to showing me around on Tuesday because they have only 1 office left with a window with a good view outside” (pretty sure being hired is all but a formality). Better insurance, 401k with match, and all that jazz.

I would just like to say thanks for the 30k raise to a job that turns out to be 5 minutes from my house condescending director. I know I was just another number to them. Now I'm just the person they missed out on.
