Second day at a new job and they cut me after 3 hours into a 10 hour shift

The job was listed at 40 hours a week and I was given a schedule four 10-hour shifts. How common is this? Is there any way to avoid it? I don’t have a problem working hard, showing up on time, doing what’s expected of me. But how the hell do you ask adults to set aside 40+ hours a week just in case you might need them?
