Seeking advice

So I'm working for my sister's friend who is also my landlord. Part of staying at my new place I was informed I'd have to do some work around the trailer and the rent will be cheap. Awesome, sounds fair to me. The second day of living at my new place he asks my sister if I want to do some work for him. Since I moved I don't have a job so I took him up on it. She told me to call him and talk to him about it. So I do. Here's where I need help. The conversation went like this, “I need more room in my basement so I'll want you to dig it out. It'll be general digging. And it'll be when I'm there so I can supervise it. It should take about 20 to 30 hours to complete.” Another key aspect he lives in…

It should take about 20 to 30 hours to complete.” Another key aspect he lives in California and comes out to Arizona for a few days out of the week.

So I get there when he asked me to start. He tells me right before I start doing any work, “It'll be $15 an hour, which is more than fair.” I just agree. After a few days my sister tells me he gave her a key and the code to his house so I can do the work when he's gone.

This was after the second day when he asked me how many hours I plan on doing that day. I tell him I wanted to do eight hours and he stammers and says, “I'm paying you cash and out of pocket, you get what I'm saying?” So I tell him you know what you tell me how many hours you want me to work and when to show up. Now he's only communicating through my sister. How should I address this without jeopardizing my new place?
