Senior employee says “I’ve never seen anyone be successful at something while only putting 40 hours in”

Newer employees at our firm were sent to a meeting on how to grow our careers. The senior employee leading the meeting says that just 40 hours per week is just not enough for this job, and that he’s never seen anyone be successful at anything while only putting 40 hours per week into it. Edit: Additionally, I’m tired of people in general pretending like 40 hours per week isn’t a lot. My friends often “brag” about how difficult their job is, where they work 45, 50 or even 60 hours per week. Obviously any more than 40 hours per week is way too much time, but imo 40 is still more time than anyone should be spending on work.
