I’ve been a stripper for about 9 years. I have debilitating chronic illness which is a lot of why I do this job- because I have been fired for being “unreliable” because I am sick when I used to work normie jobs. I swear the shit that people think would be the hard parts of this job really are not usually an issue. The issues I’ve personally experienced 90% of the time is the complete refusal of club managers/owners to treat me and my fellow dancers with basic human decency or follow the law when it comes to dealing with us. We are independent contractors, so we do not get most of the protections employees do when it comes to work conduct or even things like unemployment even though we pay taxes and rely on the club for work. This has reached a new level of fuckery for me as my contract was terminated because I politely asked my managers to enforce the mask mandates that they have ignored and never enforced for the dancers/staff/customers. I was usually the only one in the club (or one of a small few) who wore a mask with any sort of “diligence”. Most people wouldn’t even bring one with them. As someone with a chronic illness this was even more important for me because getting Covid would have unique complications for me and my life. They even were reported to OSHA by my friend who also was appalled at the constant outbreaks within the club due to the lack of enforcement. But now I have no income and I can’t even find a lawyer who will take this case on because it’s s allegedly so “complicated”. (Portland, Oregon).
