I'm a bartender, and the place I work has exactly enough people to cover every shift. No wiggle room. That means when someone wants a day off or something goes wrong someone has to pick up extra work to cover it.
This week I got a call saying the other bartender was having car issues and was not looking like they would make it to work. That's sucks and I sympathize but i got this call an hour before the shift would have started and had things I was going to do. I said no I could not cover.
I then come to find out the other bartender had not shown up to work the rest of the week.
I come in for my regular shift and am pulled aside and ridiculed for not covering a shift in an emergency. It's not my job to be on standby to cover others shifts. If I'm going to be expected to drop everything and make up for the fact you don't hire enough people then I should be payed for that. I am not responsible for fixing problems the company has created by being cheep.
