So I want to share what happened to me with my employer. I work in a fish plant for 9 years. I was promoted to lead hand of clean up and wanted to do a good job.
So Covid hits in 2020 and our fishery gets delayed. So we lose over a month of fishing. So when we do return it’s very busy. I worked 518 hours in 36 days. On the 36th day my back gave out. Complete tear of my back. So then the shit begins.
First when I got hurt I couldn’t walk up steps or do anything. So I take a couple days off before I go to the doctor. I’m giving a week off and week on restrictions. So during the first I was off I called by my employer telling me I’m obligated to take work they can offer. So I’m forced against doctor orders to work so I do. It was the hardest thing I had to do. Came home in tears from the pain. So no more work until the order lifted. Everyday I get a call asking me for a update when I’m coming back. Eventually I come back earlier cause I didn’t want to disappoint them.
I return and we finish the season and I go home. Yet I realize hey my backs not better at all. So I go to my family doctor and start physio. I get some relief from that but not to the point true recovery. So next season in 2021 starts and I’m still hurt.
So back to the doctor and I get about 6 weeks off. Employer didn’t like this at all. So when I do return it’s a very bad atmosphere for me for the first time in 9 years. Anyway seasons going with my return to work program. I get hurt again lifting a water bottle. My fault of course but anyway. I take another two weeks off because of it. Yet I’m a emotional wreck at this point. So I told the manager I was quitting and wrote my letter of intent to quit. I pass it in and 3 hours later change my mind and thought hey all good. Worst thing I ever done. They were not taking me back. So I had to file grievance to get my job back. Yet I win that. At that time though I was cleared for pre injury duties. Even though that was premature. Problem is now is there’s a chance they don’t have to accommodate me. So everyone listen when you cost your employer money they will push you out no matter how good you are
