Currently on a silent war with my manager to fix my shifts. He's been quietly adding hour after hour until I said that's enough, I don't want to work 10h everyday, and not to give me more than 8hrs. My colleagues are in my same conditions, but they're deep into the slave mentality, with children to feed, they wouldn't dare ask for less hours. YET, chatting around, all I hear now from their stupid mouths is “leavng early today uh? Luckyboy, enjoy the sunny day!” Or “sure if you don't care about the money…” or “you travel from so far to come to work…”
WHY? Why do I need to justify working ONLY 8hrs! An 8hrs shift is more than a respectable shift, it's still A LOT of time. Who even cares about the extra money? I don't want it, I'm fine with my income, I rather spend more free time on myself. Everytime someone asks me to stay longer I picture them waving a 20£ note, will you take it? No thanks, I'm not a whore, and I don't owe you anything. Yes, my workplace is a shithole currently, heavily understaffed. But guess what? That's because people are leaving, and why are they leaving? Because retail work is thrash, it's that simple. Yet all I hear is my manager complaining how “young people/students want a job/money without working…”.
