I work in a grocery store. I was talking to the deli manager about how my department's manager asked if she could put some damaged items in the break room for people to take, since we couldn't sell them ourselves. Upper management said “Nope, you have to throw it all away.” This was two cases of product. The deli manager said “Yeah, we've been having trouble with employees stealing.” I half-jokingly said, “Well, we don't get compensated enough anyway, I barely make above minimum wage.” With the most attitude ever, she replies, “So you think it's okay to steal?” I say, “No, I don't think it's okay to take stuff from the floor, but I don't see why it's not okay to take mispicks home.” She replies that that decision is up to each department manager, and, “It doesn't matter how much you make.” I get it, stealing is bad, obviously. But she doesn't seem to think it's a problem that a lot of people here struggle to make ends meet, with some having second jobs. Maybe I'm wrong, but maybe if we were paid enough so that we could *afford* to shop here, this wouldn't be so much of an issue.
