Should it be normal that if you choose to work for someone, it is assumed that you give up your right to celebrate holidays?

english is 2nd language, sry in advance* A big music festival is coming to my city and will be held the weekend after my school gets out. After a long, grueling semester, I would like to take my girlfriend there and celebrate together (hopefully in celebration of good exam scores), but I find that my employer says I cannot take those days off due to it being the same weekend as the music festival, and his business will receive a higher demand than usual. Apparently, it's an unwritten rule of many workplaces that if you work for someone, you no longer celebrate holidays until you leave the job. 🙁 **And before you ask, yes. He calls us all his “family”
