Not sure if this is the right place for a post like this but I’m wondering about the legality of a few things at my new job (Ontario).
I just started working at a cafe that opened up near me. Right now it’s 5 employees, and the manager and his wife running the store. A few days ago he had us all come in the day before opening to see the store and talk about what we would be doing. a sort of orientation. This was about 2 hours and I assumed we would be paid for it because I think it counts as training.
Today I learn that he isn’t planning on paying us for it from another girl who asked him about it. I feel like this is wrong but I’m not actually sure if it is since we weren’t open and we didn’t do any real work besides look through the store, ask questions about stuff, and test out a few coffees.
I like the manager and his wife, they are very nice and give us free coffee and huge discounts on food but I don’t want to be in another job where I am taken advantage of and feel like I can’t speak out about it. So I’m wondering if he is required to pay us for the two hours we were there on Wednesday and if there is a specific law I should cite to him when I talk to him about it.
EDIT
I think I’m gonna let it go, it’s only $30, which I will easily make up in discounts. They’re new to owning a business and I’m sure they’re also going through a learning curve. If I notice payment missing for actual work hours I’ll talk to him but since it was just an orientation while the store was closed I don’t think I want to make a big deal out of it. I have worked for abusive companies and managers before, my gut is telling me this guy and his wife don’t fall under that category.
