A little backstory — I’ve worked as an account manager for an unnamed corporate financial entity for just over a year now. A job as a business analyst opened up at the company. It would entail a substantial raise and the partial opportunity to work from home. I applied, took part in two interviews, then was offered the job.
In the offer letter I signed, the company identified an “anticipated start date.” They also clarified the raise would take effect at that time.
In reliance on this fact, I purchased a new car to replace my totaled one. The prior car had been totaled when it was slammed into while parked just outside my house. I had proceeded to make this purchase in reliance on the job offer I had accepted.
Now, a week later, I hear through my supervisor that the director of our company, who did not take part in my interview process for the new position at all, is holding up my switch over to the new job because he views my prior account management role as vital and doesn’t want me moving up until they hire someone to replace me.
Now I’m to the point of considering hiring a labor lawyer to dispute this. Not only did I sign an offer letter for a specific date, I made a substantial purchase in reliance on that offer.
Any thoughts on how bringing a suit might go?
