Banner outside Mcdonalds claimed it was offering $17 an hour! Yet every tiem I went, they were always so short staffed that it would be 2 people working in the entire building. So I was like WTF?! and decided to apply to find out why 17 wasn't good enough (I was VERY bored one weekend).
I have a masters degree, years of experience in corporate, and have been a server at Olive Gadren. So I applied as a manager, figuring that otherwise I'd be over-qualified and so rejected.
At the interview, I was asked if I had any grill experience. I assured the guy I could pick it up fairly easily. He offered to hire me at 30 hours a week (so no benefits) on a “training pay” of minimum wage. After 6 months, I MIGHT be able to rise up a dollar more and in a year, could be trained as a manager.
I was like, “what about that sign outside, then?!”
“Ohh, that's if you have five or more years experience in fast food. Then we'd talk about hiring you at that price.”
Not wanting or needing the job in the first place I decided to push “Don't you think that's false advertising, then?”
“No one said you have to work here. I need people with experience. You've never worked in the kitchen, so you get training pay to start, just like everyone else.”
So yeah, no way in hell. A year later, that bogus banner is still on their front lawn, signs pasted all over the door, and a bare bones staff. Then people complain that no one wants to work. No Boomers, we're happy to work, we're not happy to be slaves without benefits so you can stuff your face with crap food.
