I work in a kitchen at a truck stop. We have two shifts: Morning shift 4am-12pm and afternoon which is 12pm-8pm. I work the latter shift.
Today my coworker got fired. Dude opened up a fresh box of chicken to make himself a meal as we were closing last night. Manager comes in this morning, sees an open box of chicken and wonders why. She checks the cameras, sees what he did and that he didn’t pay for it, she calls him and he lies and said he paid, and now he’s fired.
I guess that’s fair, dude made him a full course meal and stole it. I don’t think it’s a big deal, but it’s on camera so management had to make a move.
Dude lost his job, but I’m fucked over by it too. He’s supposed to work the 4-12 shift tomorrow, but now that’s on me. So when I leave work at 8 tonight I get whole 8 hours to eat, enjoy my night and sleep before I have to come back at fucking 4am.
I know the usual mantra of this sub is “fuck that, quit”. But I don’t hate the job, I get to work unsupervised, no micromanaging, the pay is OK and I get paid every week. I got bills and rent so I need a job. It’s easy work and a comfortable gig, but I’m not trying to be at a place that works me like Amazon.
My options are limited because I’m in a college town. Our “good jobs” in this town are Walmart and places you need a degree for. I’m not sure what to do so I guess that’s why I’m here.
