I worked at a small pizza shop in SE PDX for nearly 3 years that regularly stole our tips, verbally abused the drivers and customers, and used “SMALL BUSINESS!” as a defense to deflect how sketchy they are.
It took over 6 months for us to convince the owner that covid was airborne and we needed to make customers wear masks inside.
Owner got mad at me for suggesting that offering the drivers 1 medium sized pizza per day was NOT considered COVID relief.
We had to report all our tips in full into the system and get taxed on them but they weren't accurately cashed out to us even on our checks.
One Manager had regular screaming matches with various customers for committing the crime of ordering pizza, weapons of choice included homophobic slurs and 911.
Found out that our 4 locations were split into two on paper so that the co-owners could claim less on taxes.
During the covid business relief packages, our owner let it slip that he “makes too much” to qualify. Got embarrassed after realizing his mistake and then drove off in his BMW (vanity plates included).
The final straw for me was when my insurance found out i was using my car for pizza delivery and threatened to cancel if I didn't supply them with the owners information. He refused, claimed I was lying, claimed the insurance people were lying, tried to get me to switch to his insurance plan (3x more expensive), claimed there was no such thing as courier insurance to begin with, begged me not to apply because, “it'll be SO EXPENSIVE for YOU!” and even tried to pay 1 month worth of insurance for me to keep me there.
All this over asking if I could have his information to apply for the couriers insurance which is something he should be familiar with being that he's the owner of a pizza shop that does delivery. He clearly didn't want to reimburse drivers for having proper insurance to work there. After I showed him the local laws about courier insurance for pizza, he entirely flipped his position and tried to act like he wasn't just trying to convince me that couriers insurance didn't even exist.
I was out the next week, got a job that paid $6 more an hour with benefits, full time, over time, matching 401k, health care, bonuses, and life insurance.
Funny thing is, I'm STILL looking around for other work because I'm tired of wasting any time being paid pennies on the dollar and I'll happily jump ship the second this job shows it's ass too.
I'm giving Bobente Bizza (mildly fake name) a 1 out of 5 stars for being a horrible place to work, having incompetent greedy owners, and they're pizza is way to greasy.
