Small PSA: If a website asks you to enter your salary so you can see how you’re paid compared to your peers, you should enter a much higher figure.

Went on LinkedIn for the first time in a long time and noticed that they'd added a “See how your salary stacks up compared to others like you” feature. I've seen this in other places too– newsletters, industry annual reviews, etc. These transparent attempts at data mining are framed as tools to help people get paid what they're worth, but more often than not, are repackaged as benchmarks/median ranges that companies use to depress wage growth. They also create an illusion that you're already being paid enough. So, if you come across one of these on LI or elsewhere, report an inflated salary. Raise the median. Make companies think your skillset is paid more than it is. Nudge other workers to ask for a raise or seek a higher salary because they are getting paid less than the “median”.
