I (M20) am quite new at my job as a picker for an online retailer (Not Amazon). Since we're in germany, the pay is okay and enough to live off. No complaints there. But today happened something that I want to share here. So I was loading goods onto my pallet, and an older coworker (in his 50's) came to me and told me I should be pre sorting the stuff and put the heaviest things on the bottom instead of just loading them as they come. I asked why since it is no problem to load heavier stuff up top as long as the pallet is stable and safe to transport after wrapping it up (supervisors Statement). If it's not, I can just call for a new pallet instead. He told me it's just better looking and since I'm one of the very few non forgein workers, I should be leaving a good impression on Management. He always unloads other pallets, sorts the stuff and puts it back. It's a tremendous amount of additional work and he expects me to do the same since I'm german native and 'thats how we do things'. I told him that since I'm new, im making the least amount of money, and I don't see a reason to do more work than the other guys, especially, when the supervisor states that I don't need to. He then asked if I don't expect from myself to do better work and I straight up told him that the only thing that I expect is the paycheck at the end of the month and as long as it comes, I did my work good enough. He then just mumbled something about todays youth and left the conversation. Management doesn't even care who loaded which palett as long as we deliver and nothing breaks so making a good impression isnt even a thing. I just find his point of view very outdated and quite racist tbh. Or am I missing something here?
