I work for a fairly large organisation. I’ve been looking at starting a side business assisting the community with technology classes and other small time tech teaching gigs (just something small).
Anyway turns out in the fine print of my contract I have to expose any potential business proposals or employment aspects to management and get them to run through it to make sure it’s not going to affect my current employment or be a conflict of interest.
Today my boss told me that I would be unable to start a business because it would be a “perceived” conflict of interest because of internal systems I use. Not even a proper conflict, just a yep that might be a thing. Classic damned if you do damned if you don’t. I don’t have the financial backing after recently signing into a mortgage to leave and go pursue it, but it’s now left an extremely gut turning feeling of being well and truly trapped both inside and outside of employment.
How do companies run both your time at work and your time outside of work. It just doesn’t make sense
