Job 1- Shelf stacker- If you are ill, tell them you aren’t coming in the morning of your shift. I worked the Saturday of my job and felt awful and thought the decent thing to do would be to tell my manager that I wasn’t going to come in tomorrow as I felt terrible. This would then give him time to get someone to cover my shift. He moaned at me, saying that I was here today that surely I could do tomorrow as well. I called in sick the next morning because big surprise, I wasn’t very well.
Job 2- Labourer- Pretend to work instead of resting. I worked 11 hour days and some of those days involved getting lumber off of a ship and then taking it to the storage. I worked very quickly and often got out of breath so that my colleagues could get all the lumber off faster meaning we are more efficient and don’t end up with a back log of lumber to get off. I got fired from there because I was sitting down waiting for the next set of lumber to arrive. Oh well, I’m not much of a labourer anyway and didn’t like the idea of working outside with drunks operating cranes that would occasionally crush the workers.
Job 3- Pizza delivery driver- Most managers of jobs like that are dumb. I was standing with about 5 other delivery drivers while staring at about 10 deliveries waiting to go out. We wasn’t taking them out because the manger was trying to get the best route for each of us. He had good intentions but it reminded me of a computing problem where sometimes figuring out the most efficient way of doing things makes the task less efficient because how long that’ll take to do. I then thought about how these places are run by people in their early twenties and if you are smarter then you probably are working at a better place for better pay. Sorry if I’m offending any managers of a similar workplace. I left this job after I ranted about the mangers always getting the shifts wrong when a holiday is booked and they didn’t like that I was complaining so kicked me from the WhatsApp group and I took that as I was fired. After my holiday was finished I got a call asking why I wasn’t in (because I didn’t have a shift plan to look at) I then quit over the phone because I couldn’t be bothered to deal with them any longer.
Job 4- Accountant for a clothing company- Mean bosses make bitter workers. One of the directors of this company made 4 different women cry while I was working there and everyone hated him. Everyone in the office was incredibly bitchy because we were working for a dick for low wages. I even found myself joining in on the bitchyness because I was starting to get bitter. I quit that job because of the toxic environment plus also I was done with working for very little doing the most boring thing I have ever done.
Job 5- Videographer- Some bosses can be nice. I got this job not too long ago after my friend vouched for me. It’s still very early on but I’ve been hired to do two promotional videos for the company and when I met the boss on the first day he offered me a job working 3 days a week meaning I have more time for my own projects and for only a bit less than I was on being an accountant 5 days a week. But the nice gesture was that he asked me if I wanted some money early because I told him I was spending the weekend with my girlfriend. It was a simple gesture of kindness that went a long way and I’m looking forward to working with this guy.
