This had taken place not too long ago and figured this would be the right place to share.
Recently I had received an offer for a job that was going to pay nearly $30,000 more than my current salary to do the same job I currently do. I was over the moon but knew I had to do what was right and for speak to my territory manager and let him know if they would be able to match or hell even get somewhat close.
I get on the phone with him let’s call him “Dan”
Me: “Hey Dan just wanted to give you a call I think I already know the answer to this question but I figured I would give it a shot anyway to get my closure. I did receive an offer for nearly $30,000 more than my current pay and was wanting to see if there’s anyway that y’all would be able to match it or even get close?”
Dan: “Yeah that’s not happening”
Me: “No problem I figured I would give it a shot and see if that’s a possibility, It is the same exact job responsibilities however they’re paying me what do you think I should be…”
Cuts me off mid-sentence
Dan: “Yeah I’m gonna go ahead and stop you there, The fact that you’re willing to entertain other companies tells me a lot about who you are as a person and tells me that you lack character”
Me: “Awesome I’m glad to hear you think that way! I quit”
Let me preface by saying, I didn’t have much hope that he would even consider matching the offer I received. However I’m glad I received my closure so I wasn’t wondering what if 5-10 years down the line…
Am I just being sensitive or was he a POS for that last comment? As employees should we not be able to be able to keep our door open for better opportunities??
