Stolen PTO?

I work for a company that has a few different arms, all of which are considered different corporate entities. My workload was due to be very light during the summer months, so the company asked me to fill in a void at one of the other companies, while keeping my now much diminished responsibilities until things pick up again in the fall. I agreed. I guess about two weeks ago, they came to me and said that they were going to pay me under the new corporate arm while I was doing that work. It was also presented to me that it would be easier for me to get a much deserved raise this way, as there was more flexibility in pay. This week I told my new direct manager that I had a planned vacation for mid July, which I had planned with my wife, when things were due…

I guess about two weeks ago, they came to me and said that they were going to pay me under the new corporate arm while I was doing that work. It was also presented to me that it would be easier for me to get a much deserved raise this way, as there was more flexibility in pay.

This week I told my new direct manager that I had a planned vacation for mid July, which I had planned with my wife, when things were due to be slow for me at work. He asked for the dates, I gave them, and thought nothing of it.
Yesterday he wrote me and said: we are denying your vacation request as you have not accumulated enough PTO at (this now new company).

I was floored. I have been a great employee by any measure, and have done whatever has been asked of me, with successful results. I had no idea I was giving up all the PTO I had accumulated in my other role (I would guess somewhere around 14 days, as I started with 11, and have only taken 1 sick day.)

I guess I am hoping someone can tell me if this is even legal? I did not sign a new contract, nor did I formally resign from my old position.
I live and work in NYC, if that helps.

I want to fight this. It is unfair. Regardless of the outcome, I am telling them today that I am going on the vacation and I don’t care if the job is waiting for me or not when I get home. But I would love to sue these fucks if I can.

Thank you comrades.
