Student Workers

Here as an outlet to express my anger toward my current situation, as well as the condition of our collective economic situation – I did everything that I was told… I was a highly involved, 3.75 GPA high school student. I worked part-time while also co-founding and presiding over a statewide advocacy organization. I received a full base-tuition scholarship to an out-of-state university, at which I currently study. I am on track to graduate in 4 years with both a B.S. and M.P.A. degree. Here as an outlet to express my anger toward my current situation, as well as the condition of our collective economic situation – I did everything that I was told… I was a highly involved, 3.75 GPA high school student. I work part-time as an on-campus front desk receptionist making less than statewide minimum wage (which is legal pursuant Arizona Prop. 206) bringing in a gross income of only ~$450/mo, before expenses. I am also highly active within the community through volunteer work, which I love and am passionate about. I am in the process of seeking off-campus living accommodations for the summer and following academic year. Unfortunately, some of us aren’t lucky enough to have friends to rent an apartment or house with. However, it is impossible to find a decent studio apartment + utilities for less than $1,300/mo. I’m also paying $50 to fill the tank of my small, 40 average mpg vehicle.

How are we, as students, expected to bend over backwards for a meaningless degree while also providing for ourselves financially? I’m lucky enough to have been awarded a full base-tuition academic scholarship, and I can’t even afford to find shelter! How much longer are we going to allow things to be this way?
