Sweep the floors for a while

I work at goodwill as a cashier. There was a really chatty older couple at my register today. Very friendly and joking throughout their transaction. I rang their total up and told them it would be $78 dollars. He playfully patted his pockets and said “Uh oh, I might have to sweep the floors for an hour or two!” His wife and I laughed. I then told him that it’d be more like the rest of the day, because they pay us $11 an hour. Their whole demeanor changed almost immediately. His wife said something along the lines of, “Oh honey, how do you make it?” I laughed it off and told her I was lucky that I had family to stay with. They proceeded to complain about the price they just paid for the clothes they just bought, which were donated freely to goodwill. (5.29 per shirt, 6.99 per…

I got a 5 dollar tip from the next customer in line, who must’ve overheard us chatting. Not everyone is an asshole I guess! Thought I’d share my little work story with the antiwork subreddit.
