Taking advantage of teenagers

So let me start this out by saying i was 16, from the UK and had just passed my GCSE exams with pretty stellar grades, (mainly A grades, and a couple of B’s). I applied for a job working as a maths and english tutor, which was advertised at £10 an hour, and when i turned up for the interview, as i was under 18 they offered me £5.45. Me being a stupid kid, with no real work experience, didn’t understand how much bullshit this was. (Apologies for any poor formatting, i am on mobile, at work, writing this from the can) We were expected to tutor zones of 6 kids, for 1 hour, for £5.45. This works out at £0.90 per kid per hour, not to mention we were expected to take notes on all of their sessions, write down things for them to work on, feed back to…

We were expected to tutor zones of 6 kids, for 1 hour, for £5.45. This works out at £0.90 per kid per hour, not to mention we were expected to take notes on all of their sessions, write down things for them to work on, feed back to their parents when they were collected from the centre AND build interpersonal relationships with the parents and with the students and if we didn’t we would be reprimanded by centre management.

When i first started, for my initial interview they told me that i would be there for 30 minutes. I spent over 2 hours at the interview, in which they did a GROUP interview with 4 other candidates and TOLD US that only 2 of us would get through. It was the most ridiculous shit and i cannot believe i dealt with it and didn’t realise.

I spent just over a year and 6 months working for that company, being promised a raise at 1 year in my contract which was then never honoured “due to covid” as they could not bring the regional manager in to conduct any reviews. So i spent that long there, and was still earning under $7 an hour for tutoring 6 children at on e. (Private tutors will charge upwards of $35 an hour per student).

As the company started to go downhill, management kept changing, and i had 4 different regional and centre managers within the space of 2 months. The straw that finally drive me to quit was a day where my new manager who i had never met, berated me for arriving to my shift ON TIME and not FIFTEEN MINUTES earlier. I politely told her to go and fuck herself and walked out, leaving the centre short-staffed for the
evening. Fuck that company, fuck taking advantage of teens and fuck that management. There are more horror stories which i am able to tell should you guys so wish.
