Hi Antiwork,
I work for a contractor for a Bank in Australia, and this job I really liked it at first, but now for a year now I am having problems with my employer and boss. I do call center work for the bank, and they have policies, to where at the end of my shift after taking nearly 80 calls which is evidently enough I work hard. They tell me to sign before I log off. No time to read and refresh the company policies right.
Now I'm scheduled to have a termination meeting tomorrow, in regards to 'serious misconduct' because I could not 'follow instructions' to go into work office on the day of my rostered shift.
Last Tuesday I could not connect to my wifi at all (I believe it was blocked by the admin of my company) as my phone hotspot could connect to the pc , my phone was connected to my wifi, also never had I had this problem until last Tuesday. My boss says it is now deemed unreliable, and i am to go into office.
Long story short, I was ordered to go into office to where I advise that I could not, and it would be impulsive to head to work. I did not want to go and work for a half day. I did not want to go and get paid for half day. I acknowledge that it is my mistake on saying it was impulsive because of work commitments but the fact my manager, and boss of the manager know I am studying part time and working part time, they know I am busy on the days that I am not rostered on. Going into office would factor in commute time, energy drainage, not factoring covid is still around, and safety in general. Bottom line I was not prepared to go into work even if instructed which is company policy.
I was prepared to work from home. I was prepared to study afterwards. I had no time to prepare to spontaneously come into office on that day to mess up my plans! I advise them I can come into my next shift which is Friday to work into office while they get my PC Fixed.
Despite giving reasons, they gave me a solution other then not coming to work on that day(Tuesday) which is to come in on my Uni days (Wednesday, Thursday). The thing is I am required to go to Uni as well. I cannot just skip? I really feel my bosses are being very unfair to which they said we are not going to go through on what's fair. If you cannot follow these 'orders' we will be having this meeting.
Now, back to the start, I have now a scheduled 'termination meeting' in regards to this 'serious misconduct' for not following orders. Now that is the situation,
I am fearing that if I apply for another job which i will need to because of this supposed termination meeting.
-
I need a referral for this company because I won't get hired without one
- I am going to have a hard time finding another job because of a problem that is out of my reach. For example when they request for a reference, they get advised I was terminated for serious misconduct which was to 'follow reasonable orders.'

I feel my boss is just abusing his powers even knowing I have uni on other days but because of these company policies he will be proceeding with termination just because he can.
I don't know why but I don't feel respected from this workplace. I feel I am just treated as a number which is very sad to me. I don't like it at all. It's a recurring pattern where it's good, it's fun at the start then later it just goes to shit.
There is no loyalty within this workplace as far as if you were to get a so called Gem Award. 'Going the Extra Mile.'
I worked hard for nearly a year now and now I'm getting fear, uncertainty and doubt from this workplace.
Sorry to rant. I just wanted to write out how I'm feeling.
Edit: sorry I would love some advice on what I should do from here
