I recently started my own business. Construction in Arizona. I did my own research and pay my workers a little bit more. I ask for their opinion on how things should be done. I encourage them to take time off. I tell them I don’t want them working on weekends. And when they do work weekend. I force them to stop at 2pm, just drop everything and go.
I actually sent my foreman home a whole week because he was sick. He didn’t want to leave and was worried about the job. I called my clients, I told them we weren’t coming back for a week and everything was good. He couldn’t believe that happened, which is sad.
I provide the cold Gatorade and water bottles daily. If they work weekends I buy lunch and beer.
In the future I want to provide a yearly working boots allowance, up to $125.
I want to provide paid time off. I want to provide good benefits.
Im 6 months in and I can see that as a possibility. We are a small business of 4 right now. Will be hiring 2 more soon.
