On mobile so my format won’t be the best.
Last year I got a job offer from a fortune 50 company to move halfway across the country to fill a position they desperately needed. I was unemployed and it was during the height of Covid so I accepted. I managed to get a really good signing bonus and for the company to cover my moving expenses as long as I sign a 2 year contract with them. Little did I know that they would use the contract to royally fuck me.
A few weeks into the job I was killing it in the field, had the best numbers, showed great leadership and I had an edge compared to everyone else here because it’s a niche field and I have an extensive background in the kind of work we were doing. The company has been treating me fair so far.
A few months later the company decides to open up a department and they chose me and another co-worker to start it. They said this would just be a lateral position so they didn’t give me a raise for it but promised (verbally) that there would be more opportunity to move up there since I was maxed out in terms of pay for my current position.
A few weeks into the new department and we were killing it and making the company a lot of money so they decided to expand the department from just a two man team. They chose to promote my coworker to be a manager who has less experience in this field and doesn’t have any kind of management experience. I wasn’t too upset since I was still in the honeymoon phase of working for a huge company and thought that they would eventually promote me to something else as well.
This is what ended up making me resent the company, we ended up hiring 3 more people to work under my former colleague and I had to train them to get them up to speed since my colleague was going through management boot camp. 2 months go by and our department is now operating autonomously with my colleague as the manager and me acting as a pseudo supervisor since he was busy with “management things”.
I found out that my colleague was just acting as a middle manager andI was essentially doing his job for him while our district manager is actually the ones handling any kind of management issues. I bring this up to upper management and they said they would look into it, I asked for a raise and they said that wasn’t in the budget for this quarter.
After this happened I slowly stopped doing my managers work so he starts unloading them to my other coworkers and a few months later three of the people that were hired got sick of it and either moved or got promoted to a different department in the company. I ended up carrying their work load along with doing some of the task my manager was suppose to do. I was burnt out and tired of it but cause of the huge penalty with the contract I couldn’t quit.
I spoke with upper management about moving back to the original position I was hired for and they said that would be impossible and even if I do I would have to revert to the base pay of that position.
I tried to just rough it out but the nail in the coffin for me was when I was talking to one of the people that left for a different department he told me his pay and it was 30% higher than what I made while we were and in the same position and that our manager made 80% more than he did. I was furious, and I started to just not care anymore.
A recruiter recently reached out to me to work for them and promised a 150% raise (I’m really underpaid for the work I do) and at this point. I’m just gonna pay whatever penalty there is and jump ship.
The best part, our department is the most profitable and I’m a cert holder for our department meaning once I leave they can’t operate until they hire someone new.
This is where I need advice, my manager is about to go on a 2 week vacation around the time I sign for the new position. Do I provide a 2 week notice or just call upper management and quit the day of. My current manager right now has spent months playing video games at home and bragging about it to a mutual friend and coworker that told me everything. He would not be able to save the department by himself but providing the 2 weeks notice would make the company bring back the other 3 people that got promoted and they never did anything wrong to deserve that
