Layoffs happen, I get it. What I'm pissed about is an ad posted on Indeed TWENTY DAYS AGO for my exact position with the exact responsibilities and the exact pay scale and perks and schedule. There has been a huge influx of new hires in the last two weeks, and then the bomb gets dropped on them that they will be laid off within the month.
There are other positions available, but the schedule won't work with us for numerous reasons. Some of us are students and go to school in the day. Some of us have part time day jobs. Some of us have to look after children. We specifically sought out Mon-Thurs night shift for a reason. We can't just flip to day shift, or change our availability from Sun-Wed or Fri-Mon.
It's not fair to these new people. I refuse to go “at least corporate gave us two weeks notice to find new jobs”.
EDIT: I'm located in Ontario, Canada. This is a warehouse position. These other open positions are hiring based on seniority. Somebody who has worked here for a year would have a better chance than the newbies that just joined us last week.
EDIT 2: I (along with 20 others) were verbally informed of this Feb 21 8pm. An official email has not gone out to affected employees yet, supervisors said they will go out later in the week, and to ask any and all questions regarding the matter or about the other open positions to the supervisors throughout the night. I asked about said positions and was told “to let them know which position I wanted to apply for, but am not guaranteed due to seniority rules” by TOMORROW, either verbally or through email. I REPEAT, THE OFFICIAL EMAIL ABOUT IMPENDING NIGHT SHIFT CANCELLATION HAS NOT GONE OUT, BUT THE DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR OTHER POSITIONS IS IN LESS THAN 24HRS
