After coming out of the pandemic up here in Northern New England I figured it was time to get out a bit, get a part time job to pay some taxes and put a few extra nickles in the coffer.
I applied for a job at the local Home Depot where I was offered a Customer Service job for $19.00 an hour with 15 to 22 hours a week.
Perfect.
Nothing too demanding.
I go thru a week's worth of hiring process and day of training and things are going smooth when all of a sudden I get a call at home from HR…
“Your rate of pay is wrong, it is not $19 but $14.50 an hour. We made a mistake and are very sorry.”
I said to the HR lady “Three times you assured me $19.00 was the correct wage. I even inquired to make sure it was correct and you checked online to be sure.”
“Yes but it was a mistake.”
I said to her “So you want to steal $100 a week from my family because you made a mistake? Please put me on the phone with the GM of the store.”
I was transferred to GM Jim.
“Look we know it was $19.00 an hour but that really was a mistake.”
I said to him “Jim you want to steal from my family and lie to my face all because you want to save a few bucks a week for corporate?”
He was clearly stunned.
I continued, “My new agreeable wage is $21 an hour and not a dime less. I will be into work tomorrow for the new wage.”
I hug up my phone and turned it off as to send any returned calls right to voice-mail.
I did not go to work the next day for GM Jim.
He called me a few times, after lunch I called him back and said “I know I told you I was coming in today to work but it was a mistake.”
I then went and had a veggie sandwich at Subway and it tasted amazing.
