I was on a job and I got a call. I tell all my clients that I do have to answer the phone but only for places that I schedule work with and that I will always keep it short. the person calling me is one of my clients and they say “you are an hour late” and I say “im working right now actually and I cant talk long, what do you mean I am late? im not working at your company today?” they say that I am on the schedule. I have never heard of that before and I have an idea of what is happening but I dont want to upset them and I am at work so I dont want to talk for very long. I say “im not aware of being on your schedule, who arraigned that with me? ” slight pause then angrily ” I put you on the schedule, you need to check it to be sure you know when you are expected here and show up on time!” I ask “I dont know where your employees schedule is nor would I know when to check it, I have not worked at your company for a few weeks if I remember right” a longer pause “ok, I see you will not be showing up to your shift today, I have you here tomorrow at 8, show up early and meet me in the office as I want to talk to you and show you where the schedule is”. I say “I am free tomorrow, so I will see you at 7:45” I show up figuring that after an entire day they would realize what happened. NO. I show up and get a chewing out for 15 min, then at 8 they say “ok, get to work”. Id been sitting their silently for 15 min listening to a lecture about work ethic and the importance of responsibility and about how “now is not a good time to be out of work…”. so very very carefully I lean forward and ask “so…you know I dont work here right?” blank look “I dont work here, you know that right? I have my own business. I do temp work for you on the days I agree to work, I prioritize the companies that provide the most hours. I might work for you 4 times a month on average, I have companies that hire me 20 days a month. I wont be checking your schedule because I only work when I am free and agree to the day and time. if that doesn't work for you I can recommend some other people that can do this job”. “get to work” I was told. so I got to work. there are certain conditions where I get a bonus for a job. at the end of my shift I go to the boss to get paid and let them know I also need a bonus as well as my regular pay. there was a pause again, they KNEW the bonus was for me having to listen to them berate me so THEY PAID IT! ha! they also increased my workload to 3 days a week “since that way we can count on you more!” man that felt good.
