I live in an area of low population density. I drive about an hour to 1 of 3 larger towns (70k-100k ish population) for most things other than basic groceries. One of these towns has a rather interesting history and is truly a union town. Walmart is the only big box store, the rest have avoided the union town. Prices for labor have often seemed a touch higher but goods actually a bit lower. Everyone is happy and capable, helpful, cheerful, etc…
Everything is functioning basically like it was pre-pandemic. I spent 2 days calling dealerships about mudflaps for a used truck we purchased, left 3 messages at both dealerships in the non-union towns, never a call back. I called the dealership in the union town. Someone answered, found parts, and scheduled me for the next day without a hiccup. I wandered several stores while waiting. Registers were manned, shelves were stocked, people were there to help.
The difference is clear: The union town is functioning, the others are not. I probably will not answer many questions, busy today!
