If you're not employing this leadership style when managing people, you don't need to be in that position and that's why you're struggling to find and/or retain talent.
If this is a “family” then treat me like a good family member would: take care of needs, listen to concerns, and defend the employee from threats.
A leader who serves (takes care) his employees and ensures they have the proper tools to do their job. This is the easiest form of leadership in my opinion. You don't need to be smart, you don't have to take the initiative, and you do not need to be loud. All the leader has to do is give direction, ask for help (not demand it), and take the time to stop operations to help an employee.
This is the method that I utilize at work and all the employees come to me with their questions, comments, and concerns. They also feel very comfortable speaking with me and I'm retaining the most talent in my group.
