They threatened to fire me, I begged them to.

I have been working for this company for a couple of years now, I was always a top performer but I was always micromanaged to the tenth degree. Fortunately for me, I had a couple of things go my way this last two years and I'm in a comfortable position money wise. In January of this year I was asked to do a different project, more responsibility but same pay. It was a Godfather offer, I couldn't refuse it. Ever since I came to this position, the micromanagement has increased tenfold, you have to do a lot of research and investigation in no more than 2 minutes.

I was doing it, and I was approched by my manager, to say I had to speed it up.

I said I couldn't do it, it was a complex issue that need investigation and thought put into it., He called me aside for a meeting.

I went into the meeting and he said “we need to improve this random metric here right now or else there will be severe consequences”

I asked him what he meant by “severe” consequences.

He said “termination”.

I said, Ok I understand. In that case, please do it now. It's unreasonable to think I will be able to provide good service with 2 minutes of investigation, and that if he thinks that is possible he is lying to himself ( no one from my team of 30 has those results).

I insisted that maybe things just wouldn't pan out the way he intended, and that I believed in taking the time to do a good job instead of rushing, and politely said that there are no “severe” consequences for me as I had my finances Ok and I wouldn't have any problems finding another job, with more pay.

He then asked why dont I quit, I said I would if I wanted to., I didnt want to but if they decide to it's fine by me.

I wrapped things up by saying I just didn't appreciate the threats of termination, that he should either fire me right away or cease completely with threats that didn't mean nothing to me.

He sulked, moaned something to myself and closed the door.

Today I won.
