This week is my last week. Worker Acquaintance who’s been here 20+ years said something I wanted to share.

This week is my last week of my 3-week notice. I like odd numbers and was leaving in the middle of a huge project, so didn’t want to screw over my co-workers. Anyway, today I was on-site at one of the locations the Parent Company owns, and the manager there pulled me aside and said something that just hit different. The reason why it hit is because this specific manager is one of the most beloved by everyone in the parent company, when a new location opens he’s the one they send and trust to get things operational, train the staff, and he gets along with everyone. Like when I say he’s loved its not just because of his skills, but his personality. He has little to no enemies, is a great dude. So this is how the conversation went. “So this is your last week?” “Yeah.” “Good for you…

“So this is your last week?” “Yeah.” “Good for you man, it’s going to be sad losing you.” “Yeah, it’s an opportunity I can’t turn-“ “Nah I get it, you don’t need to explain anything. Man, I’ve been with this company a long time. They’ll never change. If you want more money, you have to leave. If you stay, they’ll never give you more. It’s too late for me, I’ve been here too long and don’t know anything different. I’m glad you’re going, especially if it’s going to lead to bigger and better things.” (Paraphrasing a bit to keep it short and accommodate grammatical errors+accent)

The fact that he was so aware of his situation, and just…complacent with it. No fire to do something about it. Made me a little sad. But it made me doubly sad, because as long as people are not leaving they have NO INCENTIVE to change.

Please give these places incentive. That’s all I wanted to share.
