Today is the anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, in which 146 NYC garment workers, mostly young immigrant women, were killed because factory owners kept the exits locked to prevent theft and unauthorized breaks. From insurance payments, owners made $325 per victim.
