Today was my second day at my new job and it was a disaster.

First off, my boss doesn’t know anything about running a restaurant, she just knows how to handle money and invest in stocks. Here is a random list of what is happening at my job: today I was put on the line with someone who has never set foot in the kitchen before, it’s only my second day so I don’t know the menu that we’ll yet the bacon we had no choice but to serve was pre-cooked LAST WEEK nothing was dated or labeled staff are not aloud to eat unless they bring their own lunch and any coffee consumed will be taken out of your pay check (not legally required to feed staff but food that is fit to eat but not serve gets thrown away every day) the food is ridiculously expensive ($4 plus tax for a SINGLE cookie that was bought in bulk from Costco) corners are…

First off, my boss doesn’t know anything about running a restaurant, she just knows how to handle money and invest in stocks.

Here is a random list of what is happening at my job:

  • today I was put on the line with someone who has never set foot in the kitchen before, it’s only my second day so I don’t know the menu that we’ll yet

  • the bacon we had no choice but to serve was pre-cooked LAST WEEK

  • nothing was dated or labeled

  • staff are not aloud to eat unless they bring their own lunch and any coffee consumed will be taken out of your pay check (not legally required to feed staff but food that is fit to eat but not serve gets thrown away every day)

  • the food is ridiculously expensive ($4 plus tax for a SINGLE cookie that was bought in bulk from Costco)

  • corners are cut everywhere ( powdered lemon filling in the lemon squares, box mix for brownies, frozen croissants, sauces come from a bottle instead of being made in house)

  • the owner wants to start buying pre-minced garlic (this one nearly made me cry I mean come on stop making it worse)

  • portions are not regulated because no one apparently knows how to do that

  • the “clean” dishes are greasy because our hot water tank is too small to keep up with us.

  • we don’t have filtered water for drinking

  • no recipes written down

I’m the only person on staff that A) has certified training in culinary and B) has completed both the kitchen first aid and food safety course.
