Took Another Job – Suddenly Became Invaluable

Last week I took a job offer at another company and suddenly I became invaluable to my current employer. My current employer doesn’t provide people in my role with any benefits, PTO, etc. We are the only role in the company that doesn’t get this. I was on my way to actually trying to unionize us as we are considered a “trade”. But now I have a job offer for an entry level job, paying more with VERY good benefits including 3 weeks PTO to start and 100% paid for health insurance. We’ve asked for PTO time and time again, last year 8 people on my team quit (leaving us with 7 people) and they still refused to budge. We all got a tiny raise and that was it. Now I put in my notice and BAM the HR manager calls me offering me all kinds of stuff like PTO…

Now I put in my notice and BAM the HR manager calls me offering me all kinds of stuff like PTO and etc. I hesitated to respond then suddenly she asks for an in person meeting with her and the Vice President of the company. We’re not a HUGE company, but in perspective I’ve talked to the VP maybe 3 times in passing prior to this.

I knew I was still going to take the other job so instead I took this as a chance to do some good for the others. I got a signed letter from 90% of my team essentially demanding benefits and PTO. I care about all my co-workers and figured it was the least I could do to try and help.

TLDR – Companies need to value their employees BEFORE they try to quit. Times are changing, it’s an employees job market now and the companies that don’t adapt will be left in the dust.
